About Us

The Adoption Registry Magazine was founded in 2006 by Ms. Heather H. McClane.

Ms. McClane has been involved in the adoption triad her entire life. Heather’s mother is an adoptee, and her mother has also lost a child to adoption. Ms. McClane herself is a First Mother.

When Ms. McClane began her search, she joined a yahoo search group. She posted her search information and within minutes people started chiming in offering search assistance, guidance and encouragement. These wonderful people, she discovered, are known as Search Angels in the adoption community. Each and every one of these wonderful people were truly Angels to Heather.

Heather’s search, luckily for her, resulted in a very quick find. This is not the case though for the majority of searches. Many searches, unfortunately, are based on the most miniscule information. For instance: “Birth Mother was 5’2” tall, was from Hawaii and graduated in 1988. Birth Mother had three siblings. Birth Mother was of Hawaiian and Eskimo descent.” It isn’t impossible to locate birth parents with such limited information, it is though extremely difficult.

Heather wanted to give back to the adoption community that gave her so much and she began volunteering as a Search Angel. Today, Heather is a Volunteer Search Angel with EMLA-AFS, adoptioncafe, theRegistry and G’s Adoption Registry. Being a Volunteer Search Angel is perhaps the most rewarding volunteering that Heather has ever done.

One of the things that Heather noticed while helping others search is the sheer volume of adoption registries out there. If you go to Google and search for “adoption registry” there are 80,500 returns. As a person searching the odds of you and your family registering on the same site to find one another is 80,500:1. Not good odds at all. Often people with good intentions begin their own registries and for whatever reason, find that they can no longer pay for the domain or no longer have time to upkeep their registries, so they fall to the wayside and so do all those precious registrations.

Upon realizing this, Ms. McClane envisioned the concept for the magazine. Registrations are valid for no more than 12 months, this is to ensure that we have the most current contact information. The magazine has an ISSN number assigned by the Library of Congress. This ensures that the registrations will never be lost.

Another thing that Ms. McClane noticed was that there is still such a stigma on adoption. There is a lot of misinformation about adoption in general. It can be a beautiful experience for all individuals involved. It can also be a horrific experience. Adoption in our Nation is a multi-billion dollar industry. This money driven system of adoption has lead to individuals coercing first mothers to relinquish, kidnapping children and black market adoptions. To protect this multi-billion dollar industry, misinformation is intentionally spread. Misinformation like, first mothers were guaranteed anonymity, asked for confidentiality, never want to find their children, or adoptees have no interest in their first mother or birth families. More often that not, this is simply not true.

Most States have closed adoption records. Every state falsifies each adoptees Original Birth Certificate and issues an Amended Birth Certificate and then seals the Original Birth Certificate away from adoptees and birth parents alike. Ms. McClane is an advocate for restoring adoptees rights to their Original Birth Certificate. If your organization is involved in the push for open records and would like to run articles to raise awareness to this cause. Please contact us.

This magazine took four years to come to fruition and we are pleased to announce our official first release will be March 1st, 2010.
This magazine is dedicated to Heather’s four sons: Kimo, Cory, Keith & Cody, without whom none of this would have been possible. It is also dedicated to Heather’s mother, LeiAloha, who is still searching for her first mother. Finally, this magazine is dedicated to all of the wonderful Volunteer Search Angels in the Adoption Triad.

From all of us at the Adoption Registry Magazine, may your search be successful.
